Identity is the starting point for effective employee screening.
Before relying on employment history, financial information or other background checks, employers need confidence that the personal details supplied by a candidate are consistent with established records.
A data-based Identity Check can provide an additional layer of verification by comparing candidate information against trusted electronic data sources.
It can help:
Start with the person. Then verify their history.
Our Identity Check is an electronic data-based check provided through Equifax.
Candidate details are compared against available trusted data sources to help establish whether the information supplied can be verified.
This can provide additional confidence in details such as an individual's identity and address history and can highlight information that may require further clarification.
It is particularly useful as part of a wider pre-employment screening process.
Depending upon the information available, electronic identity screening can help verify:
The information returned depends upon the data available for the individual being screened.
Whether the candidate's supplied identity information can be matched against available records.
Whether the individual can be associated with the address information provided.
Available data can help support verification of previous address information.
Relevant Electoral Roll information may contribute to the electronic identity verification process.
Differences between candidate-supplied information and available electronic records can identify areas that may require further clarification.
Checking Your Staff uses Equifax to provide our data-based Identity Checks.
Equifax is a major provider of identity, credit and data services and uses established electronic data sources to support identity verification.
The check provides employers with a quick way to add data-based identity verification to a wider employee screening programme.
We offer both — but they are different services.
Identity Check
Our Equifax Identity Check is data based.
It compares candidate information against available electronic data sources to help verify the details supplied.
Digital Identity Verification – IDVT
Our Digital Identity Verification service, provided using Entrust IDV technology, uses identity documents and, where appropriate, biometric verification to establish identity.
IDVT can also be used within certain prescribed Right to Work and DBS identity-verification processes where the relevant requirements are met.
The appropriate service depends upon what you're trying to establish and why the identity check is required.
If you're unsure, speak to our team and we'll help identify the appropriate route.
Identity screening is often most useful when combined with other employee checks.
Checking Your Staff can combine Identity Checks with:
Right to Work
Adverse Financial Checks
Social Media Checks
BS7858 screening
This allows employers to manage multiple elements of employee screening through one provider.
Data-based Identity Checks can be useful across a wide range of sectors, particularly where employers want an additional electronic identity check within their recruitment process.
This can include:
Facilities Management
Financial services
IT and technology
Businesses recruiting remote workers
The check can be used individually or incorporated into a broader screening package.

An Identity Check helps verify information about an individual.
It does not establish that somebody has the legal Right to Work in the UK.
Employers must still complete the appropriate prescribed Right to Work process.
Checking Your Staff provides separate Right to Work screening and can help identify the appropriate checking route.
An Identity Check does not search an individual's criminal record.
Where criminal-record screening is required, an appropriate Basic, Standard or Enhanced DBS check may need to be completed depending upon the role and legal eligibility.
Likewise, identity screening doesn't replace employment references, sanctions screening or other role-specific checks.
Each check answers a different question.
It is an electronic check that compares candidate information against available trusted data sources to help verify the personal details supplied.

No. Although Equifax also provides credit and financial information services, an Identity Check and an Adverse Financial Check serve different purposes. If you require financial screening, this should be requested separately.
A discrepancy doesn't automatically mean somebody has provided false information. There may be legitimate reasons why electronic data doesn't correspond exactly with the information supplied. The discrepancy should be reviewed and, where appropriate, clarified with the candidate.
